Down by the water
St. Michael’s Park: The Schuylkill Canal Association’s 34th anniversary is celebrated during Canal Day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 26 at Lock 60 and St. Michael’s Park in Mont Clare, across the Schuylkill River from Phoenixville. Activities include a five-mile Trail Run, kids fishing derby, Sly Fox Kan Jam Tournament, a singles and doubles horseshoe tournament, a five-mile canoe/kayak race, a kayak sprint race, Highland Games, the Canal Joust Championship, Dr. Kelly’s Medicine Show, Old Canal Days stories and songs, kids games and live music. Return of the dinosaurs
Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University: “Dinosaurs Unearthed,” an assemblage of roaring, moving, life-size dinosaurs offers a journey back in time June 25-Jan. 17. The exhibit also features skeletons, claws and horns, mosasaur and spinosaurus teeth, an oviraptor egg, touch stations and a chance to control the movements of a yangshuanosaurus and protoceratops. Independence Seaport Museum: “Artship Olympia” opens June 25, and features 16 site-specific art installations on Cruiser Olympia’s interior and exterior decks, curated by Philadelphia Sculptors. It highlights each artist’s personal interpretation of the vessel, while highlighting the ship’s history, stories and culture through Oct. 2. The museum is at 211 S. Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia. Barnes Foundation: “Sun Splashed,” a mid-career survey of the found-object assemblage art of Nari Ward, goes on display June 24-Aug. 22. Celebrate freedom
St. Paul’s Elkins Park: From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 19, it’s Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States. The festival at the church at 7809 Old York Road, Elkins Park, includes presentations, tours and exhibits — featuring Daisy Century as Harriett Tubman and Robert Fuller Houston of the 3rd Regt. Inf. U.S. Colored Troops Civil War Re-enactors, along with representatives of the African-American Genealogy Group of Philadelphia and Camp William Penn — a marketplace, children’s activities, food and live music.
Summer pastimes
Pennypacker Mills: On June 25 at 1 p.m., the site hosts a free 1800s-style vintage base ball game (baseball was spelled as two words back then) with the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia versus the Brandywine Base Ball Club. In those days, pitching was done underhand, the score was kept on a blackboard, most of the players had moustaches, and no one used batting helmets, fielding gloves, or a catcher’s mask. Guests are encouraged to stop by the team bench and meet the “ballists” as they warm up. After the game, kids can play “Town Ball” with the team members. The team provides all the instructions and equipment. Pennypacker Mills is at 5 Haldeman Road, Perkiomen Township, and you should note that the Route 73 Bridge over the Perkiomen Creek is closed. There is a detour onto Plank Road to Route 73 to reach the site; follow the signs. Refreshments will be available, but visitors are also encouraged to bring a picnic, as well as lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on. The mansion will also be open for tours.
Green Lane Park: Investigate the nighttime activities of fireflies with “Catching Lightning in a Jar” at 8:30 p.m. June 17. The program is suitable for ages 3 and older. Bring a plastic container (no glass, please). All of the insects will be released after they are examined. Meet at the Tennis Court Parking Lot at 2298 Green Lane Road, Marlborough Township.

Under the Lights Car Show: Lansdale’s Fairmount Fire Company rolls out the red carpet for hundreds of classic vehicles starting at 7 p.m. June 18 (rain date June 19) on West Main Street. Also, Pypes Performance Exhaust, 2705 Clemens Road, Hatfield, holds an open house car show June 17-18. On Friday, there’s an afternoon cruise-in, and a casual cruise through the local area with food. Saturday features a Muscle Car & Truck show, a Mustang show and a Pontiac show.
Skippack Village: The Continental Car Show & Motorcycle Competition features American-made cars, crafters and vendors, food, music, face painting, a kids’ cartoon character visit and more 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 19 (rain date June 26) in the Hotel Fiesole parking lot off Main Street, Skippack.
Dads and grads
One Liberty Observation Deck: Through June 30 at the 57-story-high observation deck at 1 Liberty Place Philadelphia, all graduates get free admission if you show up wearing a cap and gown and are accompanied by a paying guest. On June 19, there’s free admission for dads on Fathers Day that are accompanied by a paying guest. Daily tours are given at 2 p.m., offering an overview of the region’s signature sights.

Alverthorpe Park: Storybook Musical Theatre sponsors its annual, one-mile Family Fun Walk at 11 a.m. June 25 in the park, Forrest Avenue and Jenkintown Road, Abington. Proceeds benefit Storybook’s Educational Theater Initiative, that provides subsidized tickets to needy children, and the Abington Parks and Recreation Department. Search for favorite characters, including Beauty and the Prince (The Beast) from “Beauty and the Beast,” Hansel and Gretel, and the Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit from “Alice in Wonderland.” Each child will receive a special passport to be stamped by the fairy tale characters. If they get all the stamps required, the passport will be redeemed for a free ticket to see the Storybook Musical Theatre’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” playing from July 13 to 23 at the Gratz College Theater in Melrose Park. Refreshments and giveaways will also be provided. Cost to participate for one adult and one child 3 or older is $22 for Abington residents, $27 for non-residents. Spring Mountain Ski Area: The third annual Spring Mount Fitness Challenge on June 18 involves a team relay 5K and fitness event. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., the Family Challenge starts at 10 and the main event starts at 10:30. The Tiki Bar will open at noon for food and refreshments.
